ABOUT

Flathead valley Roller Derby (FVRD) was formed in December 2009. After an almost three year bout-hiatus, we came back together with a 2023 Spring season- and we're better than ever!

Our organization strives to bring people together with a shared love of skating and roller derby. We welcome all genders and fitness levels; and in our league there are both contact and non-contact roles, as well as non skating positions. We value community and connection, and are working to address the potential barriers that can make it difficult to start and continue with roller derby.

FVRD runs on all volunteer basis and operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. As our group continues to grow and rebuild, we are looking forward to becoming activley engaged with our local community.

ROLLER DERBY FAQ

IS ROLLER DERBY FAKE LIKE WRESTLING?

This ain't your mama's roller derby! Modern day roller derby is a real sport! However, like wrestling, the fun, competitive, and aggressive nature of the sport lends itself well to rink side theatrics and drama that has nothing to do with the sport. This just adds to the fun and spectacle that is roller derby!

DOES SIZE MATTER?

No! One of the greatest things about roller derby is that whatever size or shape you are you are at an advantage.

WHAT IF I AM LITTLE? DO YOU HAVE TO BE BIG AND BURLY TO PLAY?

No way! Generally, the smaller girls are faster and are usually placed in the Jammer position as team scorers. They are squirrelly, quick, and easy to whip around the rink. Also, smaller girls generally fall down less since they have a lower center of gravity.

WHAT IF I AM LARGE? DO YOU HAVE TO BE LEAN AND ATHLETIC TO PLAY?

Nope. A lot of us haven't been on skates for years. Some of us had never skated before EVER! We will all start out at different skill levels, but at our practices we teach everyone the skills to skate derby style. Don't worry. Just wear your protective gear and take it slow at first. Don't be too scared by the term "try outs." Being a derby player is a lot more than just being a good skater; although we will primarily be looking for basic skating skills, we also look at your potential as a valuable member of the team. Have no fear! FVRD doesn't let their skaters do contact drills until they have passed safety assessments.

DO I NEED TO HAVE TATTOOS?

Contrary to popular belief, tattoos are not required. However, if you are looking to get a tattoo, there are a few girls in the league that can hook you up with a great tattoo artist!
